You are heartily invited to join us on our extended 5-day Holotropic Breathwork® and Zen Meditation retreat on a transformative journey of self-discovery.
Holotropic Breathwork, Zen and the Spiritual Quest.
“An important characteristic of the holotropic strategy of therapy and self-exploration is that sooner or later it turns into a philosophical and spiritual quest.”
-Holotropic Breathwork, Grof & Grof, 2010
“To study the buddha way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self."
-Zen Master Dogen (1200 - 1253)
On this retreat we will have five days to dedicate ourselves to the spiritual quest. Through Holotropic Breathwork® (HB), Zazen, lectures, sharing and discussion, making mandalas, movie yoga, physical exercise and being together as a temporary community each person will have time to inquire deeply into themselves. There will be Q&A exchanges with lectures and presentations on the practice and theory of HB. Each participant will experience four Holotropic Breathwork sessions on this retreat. ( Two as Breather and two as Sitter )
Often when studying the concepts and theories of Holotropic Breathwork®, though approached through the mind, an inner yearning can awaken to take up a spiritual path. Zen is such a path. In these five days there will be talks on Zen Buddhism and guidance in Zazen, the age old method of seated meditation. Practicing Zazen - with upright posture, breathing and meditative walking, we take time to integrate our HB experiences. As body and mind settle, turning inside we can see our true nature.
Continuing through the expanded states and sometimes extraordinary experiences of HB and then sitting Zazen, we will be able to look closely at how we relate to our experiences. It can be that immediately after a HB session we feel whole and at ease. But when the mind comes back in, and we attach to and try to organise the experience, we lose the sense of ease and wholeness. Holding or attachment in Buddhist language, is one of the basic actions of a self. In this phase of the journey we start looking into the very idea of who or what this self is.
Developing focused attention in the stopping and seeing practice of Zazen, we can become aware how we sometimes use experiences from our HB sessions to re-create the dualistic self that we were suffering under and had set out to change. Zazen, when practiced in the right way, is a method that does not change or remove anything. Rather, by allowing the body and mind to settle, our dualistic self and its ideas drop away, and we are naturally at ease, not needing to attach to anything. This natural, focused, non-holding attention can in turn be brought back to our HB sessions as we continue to open and let go of experiences so that moment by moment we remain present and available.
Zazen enables us to integrate, embody and allow the settling of our Holotropic Breathwork® experiences. From this settled place, progressively deepening our sense of being home, we are free to experience whatever arises here and now.
No previous experience is required in Holotropic Breathwork® or Zazen meditation. All are welcome.
