Jung's method of embodied active imagination invites us to engage not only with inner images and symbols but with the whole embodied experience of the psyche. Through the imaginal realm, we enter a spiral journey that weaves together the conscious and unconscious, the personal and archetypal, the somatic unconscious and the subtle body.

Jung and Embodied Healing through the Imaginal Realm

Like Stanislav Grof, C.G. Jung was a psychonaut, a pioneer in exploring the depths of human consciousness. In 1913, Jung entered an intense psycho-spiritual crisis, which led him into a profound encounter with the unconscious. For several years, he consciously engaged with inner images, figures and experiences emerging from both his personal and archetypal psyche. Through this process, he developed the method of active imagination, which became a foundational element of his life’s work and his understanding of healing and transformation.

Jung understood the creative and healing power of the unconscious. He borrowed the term Mundus Imaginalis from the Sufi tradition, the imaginal world where one enters into a conscious dialogue with the personal and transpersonal unconscious. This realm is neither simply fantasy nor external reality, but a living dimension of experience where symbolic images, inner figures and deeper layers of the psyche can reveal themselves.

Through the imaginal realm, we enter a spiral journey that weaves together the conscious and unconscious, the personal and archetypal, the somatic unconscious and the subtle body. Jung’s method of embodied active imagination invites us to engage not only with inner images and symbols but with the whole embodied experience of the psyche.

Also, drawing on the contemporary neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist’s exploration of different modes of perception associated with the two hemispheres of the brain, we will reflect on the importance of Jung’s and Grof’s work in our current time and the power of integrating different ways of knowing: rational and intuitive, analytical and imaginal, cognitive and embodied.

In this module, we will explore how Jung’s understanding of the psyche can enrich our relationship with expanded states of consciousness and support our ability to trust the inner healing process. We will explore how encounters with the imaginal realm can become pathways for integration, transformation and deeper self-understanding.

Through the experiential practices of embodied active imagination, engaging in authentic movement and an expressive approach to dreams, we will explore different ways of listening to the wisdom that emerges from within. Film, reflection and dialogue will support us in discovering meaning in the images, experiences and symbols that arise.

The connection between Jung’s work and Grof’s understanding of expanded states of consciousness will be explored throughout the module. Four Holotropic Breathwork sessions - two as a breather and two as a sitter - will provide an experiential foundation to deepen our exploration of the imaginal realm and encounter the healing intelligence of the psyche directly.

For facilitators of expanded states of consciousness, developing a relationship with the imaginal realm and the symbolic language of the psyche deepens our capacity to accompany processes with openness, humility and respect for the unique unfolding of each person’s inner healing journey.

This module invites participants into a deeper exploration of the symbolic language of the psyche and the transformative potential of meeting ourselves through the images, sensations and experiences that arise from within.

This module is open to anyone interested in Transpersonal Psychology and the healing potential of holotropic or expanded states of consciousness. No previous experience with the Holotropic Breathwork method or active imagination is required. The module speaks alike to people who are new to Transpersonal Psychology as well to those who are experienced already and wish to deepen their understanding.
